In 1891, the fun started at 7 o’clock when the fire was lit, lighting up the countryside for miles around. The fireworks went on for about two hours. A squib got into the nostrils of one man and another got ashes from the fireworks in his ears, which he proceeded to pick out with his penknife. The ‘guy’ this year had a coat of many colours, with trousers made of sacking. Its outfit was completed with a hat and waistcoat. It was impaled on a stake and burnt in the fire. After the usual baked potatoes there were loud cheers and everyone went home.
