Click here for Tiarks Family TreeThe earliest known member of the Tiarks family, Releff Tiarks was born in about 1580 at Jever, Germany. Releff's great-great grandson Albrecht Tiarks (1694-1775) and Albrect's son Johann Hinrich Tiarks (1723-1804) were both pewterers by trade and Councillors of Jever. Johann had six sons and three daughters. Two of the sons died at an early age. One carried on the family business and of the remaining three sons two decided to enter the Church. The sixth son Wilhelm (1768-1858) was the Archdeacon of Jever in 1826 and a Church Councillor. He did not marry.

The fourth son, the Rev. Johann Gerhard Tiarks (1761-1813) was Garrison Chaplain at Jever and Vice-Principal at Jever Grammar School in 1792. In 1788 he married Catherina Dorothea Ehrentraut by whom he had four sons and three daughters. The eldest son became an astrologer and mathematician, the second a historian and the fourth a merchant.

The third son, the Rev. Johann Gerhard Tiarks (1794-1858) was educated at the University of Heidelberg, Germany and in 1825 married Emily Phipps of London, England. His descendants are displayed on the outlined family tree. He was Chaplain to Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Kent and Pastor of the Reformed Lutheran Church in Hooper Square, Goodman Fields, London, from 1827. Johann and Emily had seven sons and two daughters, John Gerhard, born and died 1827, John Lewis (1830-1846), John Gerhard (1831-1902), Henry Frederic 1832-1911), Charles Phipps (1834-1924), Edward Herman (1836-1838), Adolphus (1839-1907), Emilie Maria Dorothea (1826-1909) and Agnes (1828-1860).

The Rev. John Gerhard Tiarks (1831-1902), the eldest surviving son of Johann and Emily, was Rector of Loxton from 1873 to 1897. He was married to Anne Condron of Macclesfield, on 1 Jan 1863. He died on 24 December 1902 and Anne his wife, died on 9 August 1889; they are both buried in the church at Loxton. They had three sons and two daughters. Their two daughters, Gertrude Agnes Tiarks (1863-1915) and Emily Phipps Tiarks (1868-1938) never married, both are buried at Loxton. The eldest son died when a baby.

The second son of John Gerhard and Ann, John Gerhard Tiarks (1867-1901) became an architect, and married Ada C. H. Harington on 6 February 1895. John and Ada had one son John Gerhard Edward (1896-1962), who served in World War I and II, achieving the rank of Brigadier. He was Aide-de-Camp to King George VI from 1947-1950. On 1 June 1922 he married Evelyn Florence, the youngest daughter of Percy Roland Cripps, of Winford Manor, Somerset. Actively interested in fox hunting he was killed in an accident when hunting with the Gloucestershire Berkeley Hunt. John and Evelyn had one daughter Anne Patricia, who was in the Women's Royal Naval Service in World War II. In 1946 she married Major Peter William Garside Phillips. They had two children Mark Antony Peter Phillips and Sarah Anne Phillips. Captain Mark Antony Peter Phillips married Princess Anne (now the Princess Royal).
