This section provides an account of a few local events and sensational items that were recorded at the time in newspapers. Any other stories and events reported elsewhere or memorabilia kindly supplied by other people is recorded and acknowledged. By comparison with todays events and news items, visitors may find the content of many of the articles somewhat tame if not bizarre but it is hoped that this might help to create an awareness of the simplicity of life at that time. A brief description of the articles is provided in the list below with links to the relevant text.


In 1887 the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria was celebrated in many towns and villages throughout the country, and the celebrations held in the village are recorded.
